Software engineer for hardware control

Remuneration Group 13 | Unlimited | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FSMA076/2021 | Deadline: 16.01.2022 | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with its more than 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world’s leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) is designed to significantly advance science with next generation light sources. The CFEL Coherent lmaging Division uses established techniques (conventional and serial crystallography) to determine the structure of biological molecules and, recently, to search for drugs against Covid-19. The group also explores several experimental strategies, such as convergent-beam diffraction and holography, to achieve atomic-resolution imaging without the need to crystallise materials. Within the division the Scientific Computing Team develops and maintains software that is used by researchers during experiments. In this context, we are looking for a software engineer to work on tools for hardware control.

About your role:
  • Develop software for hardware control during X-ray experiments at synchrotron and X-ray Free Electron Laser facilities, based on our existing frameworks
  • Maintain and develop these frameworks and software derived from them for specific devices and laboratory settings
  • Develop new software capabilities and frameworks to accommodate novel experimental hardware
  • Collaborate with experts in diverse fields such as structural biology, X-ray imaging and crystallography, instrumentation and controls, and detectors to identify the needs and challenges
  • Contribute occasionally to the other projects of the Scientific Computing team (software for real-time image processing, database for crystallographic experiments)
  • Provide advice to the members of the division about best practices in software development
Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time and job-sharing. As a public employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH.

About you:
  • Master`s degree or PhD in software engineering, computer science or equivalent.
  • Excellent knowledge in object-oriented software development and design
  • Very good knowledge in Python programming language, knowledge of C/C++ is considered as an advantage
  • Very good knowledge of best practices in software development (version control, documentation, unit testing, continuous integration, continuous deployment)
  • Very good knowledge of communication protocols
  • Demonstrated experience in developing software for hardware control
  • Experience with beamline controls and Tango is a plus
  • Good spoken and written command of the English language
  • Willingness to provide software support to users during experiments, occasionally outside of regular working hours
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and appreciate working in an interdisciplinary team environment
