Are you an expert in analysis of 3D images with an ambition of carrying out research that will change the world? Then you are the person we are looking for to fill the position as our new postdoc in image analysis for computed tomography at the DanMAX beamline at MAX IV. DanMAX is a Danish-funded material science beamline at the MAX-IV synchrotron in Lund, Sweden. With this position you will get the perfect foundation for a career in 3D imaging and analysis research.
During 2022, the construction of the tomography end station at DanMAX will finish and we will have an instrument for 3D X-ray phase contrast imaging with superior technical specifications. This will allow for unique experiments in a wide range of areas from hard materials to biology. The impact of this research is, however, dependent on the analysis methods employed and the interpretation of these results. With this position, we want to have an expert in image analysis at the beamline where the experiments are done. This will ensure that experiments are optimized for later analysis, and that the experimental results will become high-impact research.
As our new colleague you will be part of a strong group of researchers working on data analysis for tomography in the QIM center – the center for quantification of imaging data from MAX IV. QIM is a collaboration between researchers located at Lund University, University of Copenhagen, and The Technical University of Denmark. You will be employed by the Section for Visual Computing at DTU but have your daily work at MAX IV in Lund. Hereby, you will link DanMAX to the data analysis research at the universities.
We expect you to engage in research at DanMAX in collaboration with scientists at the beamline and the researchers in QIM. Building on the analysis tools and experience already established, we expect that you will contribute with analysis that leads to standardized analysis pipelines and procedures that will ensure that the time from experiment to results is short. Hereby, DanMAX impacts the field of tomographic research through fast publications of the latest experimental results.
Responsibilities and qualifications
We expect you to drive your own research in analysis of tomographic data and through this contribute to the data analysis platform used at DanMAX. You will also be involved in supporting the users carrying out experiments at the beamline and become the expert in data analysis. This will be a valuable contribution that ensures that the data produced by DanMAX will be well suited for analysis.
In you daily work, you will be placed at DanMAX and collaborate closely with the beamline scientists but also other MAX IV groups and support teams at MAX IV. But you will also collaborate with the QIM researchers and regularly come to DTU Compute and the 3D Imaging Center at DTU.
As an image analysis expert, you are expected to be a skilled programmer and a routine user of image analysis and visualization packages. We also expect you to be able to use deep learning methods for image segmentation and other processing tasks.
Your primary tasks will be to:
- Be part of the DanMAX team and support the user experiments in planning, carrying out the experiment, and helping and advising on the following data analysis.
- Develop a tomographic reconstruction and data processing pipeline based on existing software (e.g. SAVU from the Diamond Light Source) to obtain the best data for a further processing.
- Carry out research in 3D image analysis for full-field X-ray imaging data acquired at DanMAX. We offer an amazing opportunity of collaborating with the best experts in the field and participating in their experiments.
- Develop generic image analysis pipelines using the image analysis computing platforms at MAX IV and QIM to address the data science challenges at DanMAX.
- Be part of the QIM group of researchers and ensure that the development of new analysis methods is coordinated with the activities in QIM.
To perform these tasks, we expect you to
- have experience with either synchrotron or lab source X-ray tomography or similar 3D image analysis,
- be a strong data analysist programming in for example python,
- be good in communicating and promoting collaboration and involving relevant people in your research,
- drive the project with an ambition and focus on impacting the field of X-ray tomography.
As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
