Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL)’s Engineering Division has an immediate opening for an Accelerator Engineering Principal Lead to join the team. The ALS is a dynamic national scientific user facility that provides thousands of scientists from around the world access to bright beams of x-rays, infrared, and extreme ultraviolet light for scientific studies and technology development in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. The ALS is a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades. The ALS-U project is a new project at LBNL that will ensure the facility’s leadership in this field for the next decades. It’s an exciting time to join our growing team!The Accelerator Engineering Principal Lead is a leadership position in the ALS-U project with project management, technical leadership, and personnel supervision responsibilities. You share responsibility with the ALS-U Accelerator Systems Lead for design and baseline planning of the new storage ring, accumulator ring, transfer lines, and all associated technical systems within the scope of the ALS-U project, and also has responsibility over technical systems integration. You closely interfaces with the other three major ALS-U areas (Beamline and Optical Systems, Removal and Installation, and Operations & Support). This leadership position is for the duration of the ALS-U project, with responsibilities that evolve and that may grow as the project advances through different project execution phases.
The duties include strategic planning, formulation, direction as well as implementation of the project to enhance the effective and efficient delivery of the ALS-U project. To accomplish this, the position requires close partnership with the ALS, Engineering, ATAP, and the Berkeley Lab Operations Divisions.

This position participates as an active member of the ALS-U senior management team and reports to ALS-U Accelerator Systems Lead.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Co-lead the ALS-U Accelerator Systems area with the Accelerator Systems Lead, including:
    • Leading engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction, assembly and pre-installation work performed by the Accelerator Systems team.
    • Managing and directing technical integration of subsystems within Accelerator Systems scope; duties may include management of technical integration between ALS-U major system areas.
    • Coordinating the Accelerator Systems presentations at meetings of appropriate committees.
  • Develop, identify and manage requirements, interfaces and risks.
  • Recruit, hire, organize, and manage, staff.
  • Manage and report on budget and schedule, including EVMS management.
  • Manage space, equipment, and facilities utilized for construction of ALS-U project accelerator systems; coordinate space needs with ALS-U space manager.
  • Work closely with the ALS accelerator team, ALS facility management, and ALS engineering team.
  • Work closely with the ALS-U procurement team on acquisition planning and effective execution of Accelerator Systems procurements.
  • Oversee preparations for reviews – e.g. technical reviews, Director’s, PMAB, OPA, etc.; organize technical reviews.
  • Report at regular team meetings, advisory committee meetings, and other venues.
  • Coordinate with ALS-U EHS lead and ALS-U management on work safety, and ensure that work performed by the team follows safe work practices.
  • Represent the Laboratory to the outside world in engineering through, for example, participation in design reviews, workshops and conferences.
  • Author or contribute to conference presentations and publications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree of  Mechanical Engineering or related field and 5 or more years of relevant experience or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge.
  • Demonstrated project management experience, preferably including DOE Order 413.3
  • Proven experience in presenting conceptual and completed designs through design reviews and documentation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of particle accelerators and beamlines.
  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills in authoring technical and scientific reports and publications.
  • Ability to perform in a team atmosphere involving multi-disciplinary personnel, as well as experience in advanced problem-solving and decision-making skills necessary to independently solve problems and make appropriate decisions.
  • Experience estimating project costs and resource requirements, generating project schedules, and tracking progress to meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with project management and tracking tools and methods.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with other engineering staff, scientific staff, external collaborators, and the highest levels of LBNL management.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • PhD in Engineering or Physics and extensive experience with particle accelerator and beamline related science.
  • Established connections and reputation with the national and international community in particle accelerators and beamlines.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
