The Linac Coherent Light Source-II High Energy Project is an upgrade to the continuous-wave (CW) superconducting electron linear accelerator and hard x-ray free electron laser (FEL) now under construction at SLAC. This project will double the electron energy of the accelerator from 4 to 8 GeV in order to extend the tuning range of the FEL from 5 to 13 keV. The project will also enhance the LCLS hard x-ray instrumentation suite to make use of the enhanced tuning range of the FEL.

LCLS-II has an employment opportunity available for a System Manager with substantial technical and managerial background to provide oversight and management of the accelerator systems for the superconducting linear accelerator in the LCLS-II HE Project. The position reports to the Project Director and carries responsibility and authority for planning and coordination of the Accelerator Systems to ensure the project’s mission and program are met in terms of technical scope, cost, schedule and resources.

Specific Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

•Serve as the Design Authority for the Accelerator Systems scope of work
•Planning and oversight of the LCLS-II Accelerator Systems scope of work at SLAC, contractors, and vendors, ensuring technical specifications and quality standards are met.
•Review of budgeting and schedule planning carried out by Cost Account managers; determining that resources are adequate in quantity and quality to meet Project needs; presentations to the LCLS-II-HE Change Control Board for the cryomodule and cryogenic distribution system areas of the project, determination that appropriate strategies for acquisition are appropriately planned and executed.
•Assessment of the cost and schedule performance project activities against the plan for work at SLAC and at partner labs, ensuring that progress relative to budget and schedule is understood and correctly reported. Make corrections to the plan as necessary optimize performance.

Managing the Accelerator Systems staff

•Authority and responsibility for activities producing a well-defined and functional interface between the LCLS-II-HE Project, LCLS operations and SLAC as a whole
•Authority and responsibility for safety dimensions of LCLS-II HE Project work; Direct observation of LCLS-II-HE work and workers; confirmation that Cost Account managers and their organizations are conforming to appropriate standards for safe work; confirmation that SLAC personnel assigned to carry out LCLS-II HE Project tasks are duly prepared by their management for LCLS-II-HE work; confirmation that WPC is being properly adhered to and that potential hazards associated with LCLS-II-HE systems and work are appropriately identified and mitigated during design, construction commissioning and subsequent operation.

•Critical evaluation of solutions to technical problems in areas of responsibility; choice of technical specifications to meet physics requirements and performance goals; identify and implement design strategies and goals for e-beam systems so as to globally minimize risk to the Project.


Responsible for planning and coordination of the Accelerator Systems to ensure the project’s mission and program, defined by the Project Director, are met in terms of technical scope, cost, schedule and resources.


•Provide strategic direction and develop long range plans that typically establish objectives and overall direction for a major function or center.
•Identify, clarify, and resolve highly complex issues with university-wide impact and substantial significance, which may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring broad discretion and judgment.
•Manage the activities of a large-scale and/or diverse technical operation,
•Create strategic long-range plans of considerable complexity and scope.
•Ensure state-of-the-art research is adequately funded, staffed, equipped, and housed.
•Exercise authority to commit and allocate substantial resources.
•Manage adoption of emerging technologies and the development of new methods and approaches.
•Identify priorities for research initiatives, training, and outreach.
•Collaborate with university leaders on research project decisions.
•Supervise other staff, including hiring, performance management, and related duties, in addition to providing instruction on complex techniques and direction on projects.

•M.S. in engineering, MBA, or Ph.D. in accelerator physics (or equivalent subject matter) plus ten years of relevant experience in accelerator systems or combination of education and relevant experience in accelerator systems.
•Nationally recognized accomplishment and leadership in DOE funded construction projects under DOE order 413.3b.
•Proven leadership in a project environment providing effective oversight and guidance of operational, management and administrative issues
•Experience in the planning, execution and management of the design and construction of large scientific projects, and the ability to work to an aggressive but realistic schedule and effectively direct a team to achieve the schedule
•Technical expertise in designing, constructing, fabricating and procuring accelerator systems and components, such as magnets, diagnostics, vacuum, control systems, etc. Familiarity with the SLAC Linac system is highly desirable.
•Demonstrated experience leading high performing project and operational teams
•Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively with funding and oversight organizations
•Broad and diverse knowledge of project management techniques and methods
•Strong analytical and computational skills necessary to gather, organize and make well informed decisions
•Experienced people leader, including leading in a multi-laboratory and matrixed environments.
•Ability to interact at the highest level of management, both internally and externally, in a constructive and collaborative manner and in a way that appropriately represents SLAC
•Experience working in an environment dedicated to quality, safety and customer service
•Experience with CAD systems, and modeling software and Windows personal computers and associated software such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
•Flexibility to travel and work extended hours when required
