Assistant Scientist – NST Center for Nanoscale Materials

Website advancedphoton Argonne National Laboratory

time type : Full time

The Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking an Assistant Scientist with an emphasis on transformational research enabled through the use and development of advanced synchrotron X-ray microscopy capabilities – particularly those enabled by the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade at the CNM Hard X-ray Nanoprobe Beamline (CNM/APS HXN).  The CNM is a DOE Office of Science user facility that provides researchers from across the globe with world-class expertise and instrumentation for multidisciplinary Nanoscience and Nanotechnology research. All research and tools are designed to support cutting edge science of the staff and the user community.

The candidate will be responsible for two areas of equal emphasis. The first is developing a world-leading experimental program based on harnessing the capabilities of the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade with an emphasis on use of the CNM/APS HXN 2D and 3D nanoscale X-ray fluorescence, diffraction and time-resolved ptychographic capabilities for operando imaging of phenomena intersectional with CNM strategic scientific directions. Potential research areas include, but are not limited to, systems for sustainable energy harvesting, storage, transduction or catalysis as well as novel microelectronics or quantum information sciences. The second is providing scientific and technical support of user experiments and operations at the CNM/APS HXN.  The prospective researcher will carry out basic research and development to both advance CNM research and to enable discoveries engaging a diverse external user community for collaborative research.

Position Requirements

  • The minimum education requirement is a Ph.D. in the physical sciences.
  • A strong background in areas of experimental or analytical synchrotron X-ray research and/or other advanced microscopy techniques used for materials research.
