The X-ray Science Division (XSD) of Argonne National Laboratory invites you to join our team in the development of cutting-edge techniques and instrumentation to enable and perform world-class research using X-rays. We are seeking an Associate Division Director (ADD) to lead the x-ray science technologies section at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), reporting to the XSD Director. The x-ray science technologies section (XST) comprises six groups and one support lab, spanning beamline instrumentation engineering, x-ray optics, x-ray detectors, controls and data acquisition, scientific software engineering and data management, and computational x-ray science. The XST ADD is part of the management team leading the division, and shares responsibility for the scientific leadership and administration of the division’s facilities, projects, and staff.
The Associate Division Director will provide scientific and technical guidance in areas that include, but are not limited to, data sciences efforts in analysis algorithms, scientific software engineering, and data management; mechanical engineering of high-end instrumentation; beamline controls and data acquisition; x-ray optics research, development, and fabrication; and x-ray detector research and development, as well as operation of the APS detector pool. The XST ADD will initiate state-of-the-art technical support and R&D efforts for XSD-operated beamlines and associated laboratories, and will coordinate activities among XST groups and with outside entities. The development and successful implementation of a strategy for the next generation of integrated x-ray science instruments will be a focal responsibility.
Candidates for this position should have:
• Considerable knowledge, skills, and experience in at least one of the technical areas above.
• Knowledge, skills, and experience in managing complex, technical organizations.
• Skill in managing a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical staff.
• Proven leadership abilities, such as conveying a vision, executing the mission, and fostering teamwork.
• Skill in written and oral communications.
• A Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, or related area and 10 years of work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
