Website CanLightSource Canadian Light Source

The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.

CLSI is now accepting applications for an Associate Scientist position within our Bio/Life Sciences department on the BioXAS-Spectroscopy beamline – a group of two independently operating endstations, sharing the wiggler source and equipped with high-sensitivity fluoresce detectors. The beamline is perfectly optimized to measure X-ray Absorption Spectra in extremely diluted samples for various applications in Bio/Life, Environmental and Material Sciences within its operation range of 5-32 keV.

  • Training and supporting users at the beamline to ensure that they are able to perform their scientific experiments in a safe and effective manner
  • Assisting users and beamline staff in sample preparation and data processing
  • Aligning the beamline and setting up the endstation for users’ experiments
  • Analysing and solving routine technical problems and developing recommendations to solve difficult, complex or unusual problems
  • Preparing beamline documentation and ensuring designs conform to CLS standards, and other relevant codes, standards and practices
  • Participating in the development of the XAS data acquisition and analysis of software
  • Assisting the senior scientist in the beamline upgrade/maintenance projects
  • Developing technical expertise in specific areas of beamline operation and equipment, either in hardware or software
  • Required to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to provide user support

  • A relevant Master’s degree or Ph.D. in the natural sciences
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy at a synchrotron or scientific laboratory with a Master’s degree, or a minimum of one year related experience with a recently completed Ph.D.
  • Experience in X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy data analysis and interpretation is required.
  • Experience with advanced beamline instrumentation (detectors, cryostats, in-situ cells, etc.)  would be considered an asset.
  • Basic programming skills in Python or C++ are required
  • Candidates should demonstrate a clear aptitude for service, teamwork and research, particularly in programs requiring collaboration.

Remuneration: Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package, including supplemental health & dental, life insurance, pension plan, and four weeks’ vacation is part of a competitive compensation package.
