CONTEXT & JOB DESCRIPTION

You will play a major role in the operation and further development of the BM18 beamline by being in charge of the material science research programme.

The beamline’s main technique is hierarchical phase-contrast tomography on large objects. Its main applications are material sciences, biomedical imaging, natural and cultural heritage and geosciences. BM18 is also strongly involved in industrial activities. You will be in charge of the material sciences applications, for both academic and industrial users, together with the other members of the team. For some specific experiments, you would work from time to time on the BM05 beamline .

As a Beamline Scientist, your mission is the following:

  • Manage the continuous technical upgrade and development of the instrument together with the other beamline scientists, industrial engineer and post-docs, so as to meet the high expectations of the user community.
  • Support users through the role of local contact, thus gaining opportunities for collaborative work at the frontiers of the field.
  • Develop your own research programme exploiting BM18’s unique technical possibilities, in the material sciences field.

EXPECTED PROFILE

  • PhD in physics or materials research and several years of postdoctoral experience in materials research, physics, or another closely related field
  • Experience in X-ray microtomography, ideally using synchrotron sources
  • A background in programming and/or large data handling would be an asset
  • Ability to interact with multi-disciplinary staff and facility users
  • High motivation, including for industrial activities that are typically not leading to publications
  • Good time management skills and ability to prioritize
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)
