The position is based at Diamond Beamline I05, which is designed for angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) using the intense extreme ultraviolet (EUV, 18 – 240 eV) beam from the synchrotron for detailed studies of the electronic structure of quantum materials. The beamline features two end-stations, one for high resolution ARPES (HR-ARPES) and the other for spatially resolved ARPES (nano-ARPES).

The HR-ARPES activity has been extremely productive since it started operating in 2014, resulting in an excellent publication output.  It has particularly attracted world-leading researchers interested in high temperature (High-Tc) superconductivity and Topological materials. The very high energy resolution of the beamline enables accurate measurement of the superconducting gap and the good energy resolution over a broad photon energy range has been utilised to probe the kz dispersion in 3D Topological materials. The state-of the-art cryogenic sample manipulator and intuitive control software interface, key features of the end-station, allow users to perform Fermi surface measurements rapidly and efficiently. The nano-ARPES branch relies on strong focusing of the beam to produce a sub-micron spot size at the sample surface that is scanned to gain information on the correlation between the spatial structure and the electronic band dispersion. This facility offers in operando capability, where a gating voltage (or current) can be applied to the sample whilst exploring its effects on the electronic structure. Research on this branch includes studies of inhomogeneous systems and measuring edge states of 2D materials. There has been a particular interest in bulk topological materials and heterostructures of 2D material flakes with micrometre sized features.

The successful applicant will work on this world leading beamline where topological materials, 2D materials and superconductors are regularly investigated. One aspect of the role involves operating the equipment and supporting experiments on both end-stations as part of the small team of enthusiastic scientists. We are looking for a highly motivated scientist who will actively participate  in beamline upgrades, in particular to exploit the opportunities presented by Diamond-II and to define/lead some of the development projects, in particular for the spatially resolved end-station. Suitable candidates should be familiar with ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) systems, the ARPES technique and specific details of the sample environment (e.g. sample manipulation or cryogenics). A scientific interest or experience in the field of topological materials or 2D materials would be an advantage. The successful candidate will help maintain the beamline including the end-station, and provide user support by assisting visiting scientists to carry out a wide range of experiments. The selected candidate will be expected to lead their own internationally competitive research activities on the beamline and elsewhere.
