Beamline I18 is a microfocus spectroscopy beamline covering the energy range from 2 to 20 keV with a minimum beam size of 2 microns. The principal experimental techniques used on the beamline are X-ray fluorescence mapping, X-ray absorption spectroscopy with Si drift detectors and to a lesser extent transmission X-ray diffraction using a 2D CMOS detector, with a new photon-counting detector scheduled for commissioning in the next year. Also in the past several years XRF and XRD computed tomography has been introduced on the beamline for materials science and biomedical studies. There is a well-equipped characterisation laboratory for complementary techniques such as micro-RAMAN.
The beamline has an active user community covering many scientific disciplines ranging from bio-medical imaging to the study of extra-planetary matter and environmental science. We would particularly welcome applicants with a background in physical sciences with desirable experience in chemistry and catalysis, energy research (batteries, solar cells, etc.), environmental science or high-pressure research. The appointed candidate should also participate in the development and commissioning of new equipment: new instrumentation such as X-ray detectors, novel sample environment, etc. You will be expected to interact positively with the user community and provide a high level of expertise to support visiting research teams using the beamline and to provide support with data analysis. The successful applicant should have an independent research program in a science area relevant to the beamline.
