Building on its capabilities in computational science and data management, the Computational Science Initiative (CSI) at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory was established to integrate and leverage computer science, computational science and applied mathematics expertise and investments across multiple programs at the Laboratory. In providing leading computational and data science solutions for BNL’s flagship facilities – RHIC, LHC Atlas US Tier One Center, NSLS II, CFN —CSI is confirming Brookhaven as a leader in tackling the “big data” challenges at the frontiers of scientific discovery. CSI’s mission is to provide “Leadership in the hypothesis driven analysis and interpretation of large volumes, high velocity, heterogeneous data’. We are pursuing this mission by engaging in research into novel approaches and methods, the provision of data management and analysis facilities, and the practical application of these resources to domain science challenges.
New generation detectors such as those becoming available at the National Synchrotron Light Source at BNL (NSLS-II) produce massive amounts of data that require novel infrastructure and advanced computing discovery and analysis techniques to address the challenges of designing and validating new material structures. Discovery and analysis are enabled at scale through the use of rich provenance metadata that characterize samples, computational structures, properties, and transformations performed on raw and derived data. We are building a provenance driven data system that collects these data and metadata from sources at BNL and elsewhere, augments metadata with keywords from the literature through applying known Machine Learning techniques, and enables querying.
A post-doctoral position is available for 2 years in the Computational Science Initiative (CSI) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The successful candidate will conduct research in developing and applying provenance techniques to materials and crystallography databases for the purpose of building a computational and experimental materials data system in coordination with the existing NSLS-II integrated data acquisition and analysis system.
- Develop techniques for capturing and disseminating provenance metadata from heterogeneous sources including sources internal and external to BNL
- Apply existing Natural Language Processing algorithms to the problem at hand
- Research novel approaches for high volume provenance capture
- Collaborate on proposals, grants, and publications in the area of materials data systems
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- PhD in a relevant scientific discipline
- Programming in one of the following languages: Python, C, C++.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge and experience of materials data systems.
- Working knowledge and experience with NPL Toolkit, Word2vec, and other NLP techniques
- Track record of producing high quality software on schedule
- Proven ability to disseminate research results by writing manuscripts and giving scientific presentations
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary scientific collaborations
- Experience in developing scientific codes written in Python
BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.
