About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth, and environmental sciences.

The Electron Bio-Imaging Centre (eBIC) at Diamond provides scientists with state-of-the-art equipment and expertise in the field of cryo-electron microscopy (CryoEM), for single particle analysis, cryo-electron tomography and electron crystallography.

Being part of Diamond, eBIC benefits from the synchrotron’s extensive user and data management resources for CryoEM. Furthermore, the unique location of eBIC and Diamond at Harwell enables a wide range of interdisciplinary collaborations and methods development. Established partnerships and collaborations include the Rosalind Franklin Institute, Central Laser Facility and CCP-EM. Together with eBIC for Industry, our site hosts eight TEM microscopes (5 Titan Krios, Talos Arctica, 2 Glacios), two Dual Beam SEM capable of lamella milling (Scios and Aquilos) and a Leica cryoCLEM.

About the Role

We now have an excellent opportunity for a CryoEM Scientist or Senior Scientist to join the eBIC team and contribute to the continued success of our world-leading scientific facility. This role will be essential in supporting eBIC’s user programme by providing both training and operational support, as well as contributing to in-house research and development projects.

You will provide expert guidance, training and advice in areas covering sample preparation and the methods and application of single particle cryoEM, cryoET data collection and image processing, as well as analysis and interpretation of EM maps.

Additionally, as an independent researcher, you will lead/contribute to in-house research activities which focussed on structural and cellular biology and software/hardware developments in cryoEM. You will be able to apply for you own grant funding should your research interest require it.

Applicants will be considered at either Scientist or Senior Scientist level depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.

About You

You will have a PhD in science, ideally in the biological/biophysical sciences, or demonstrate significant equivalent experience.

You will have experience in:

  • The operation of transmission electron microscopes especially for structural biology applications, as well as experience with Windows/Linux/Unix.
  • Designing, planning, organising, and implementing projects and tasks within an allotted timeframe, as well as the ability to lead your own research project.

For appointment at senior level, you will have significant experience at post-doctoral level, working within a scientific or academic environment, with experience in CryoEM essentials, including a track record in CryoEM related research, experience with handling of biological samples, high-resolution data collection, cryoET and data processing/analysis.

We especially welcome candidates with experience in cryoET and cryoCLEM as this is an area that is being actively developed at eBIC.
