About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.

About the Role

As part of a team of experienced software scientists and engineers within Diamond’s Data Analysis Software Group, this role will work in partnership with visiting and local scientists to help drive scientific experiment output and beamline development.

You will be working to improve core capabilities to provide robust and high performing scientific software to help the user community to advance science.  This work will improve how Diamond scientists and users both acquire and process their data and will help to support research in areas such as battery research or biological imaging of cells and tissue.

This role will allow you to develop and further hone your expertise within an internationally renowned multidisciplinary environment, driven by the pursuit of scientific excellence.

Electron and X-ray diffractive imaging techniques, such as ptychography, can be used to explore the properties of complex materials at the highest spatial resolutions and with great sensitivity. The development and application of these techniques is growing rapidly and to drive this forward at Diamond we are seeking to improve the experimental workflow (assisting with data processing and interpretation, rapid computation and real-time feedback) and to advance new methods to address current scientific needs. Ptychography has a large component of post-data collection processing and analysis throughput can be increased by further exploitation of parallelism. This role will work with scientists to develop, improve and automate coherent imaging-based analysis, improve expertise in the user community (workshops, documentation, tutorials) and assist users to get the most from their data.

Successful applicants will be appointed at either Grade 5 or 4 of Diamond’s staffing system, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.

About the Team

You will be joining an experienced team of researchers, within the Imaging and Data Analysis Software groups to add to the extensive expertise that the team has in experimental method development, data collection, data processing and analysis.

You will collaborate with other team members and our internal and external scientific users, with fantastic opportunities to develop and learn within an experienced multidisciplinary team. You will have the opportunity to help others develop professionally and to create and deliver new and exciting projects.

We envisage that your experience and underlying knowledge will be an ideal and timely addition to the team – and an indispensable asset to ensure further development of the capabilities of the Imaging and Data Analysis Software groups.

About You

You will have practical experience of the full software development lifecycle and, above all, demonstrate a passion to learn and think creatively in the solutions we provide to enable science.

You need to be proficient in scientific computing related technologies such as Python and its numerical packages, and C/C++ and ideally have some experience in handling bulk data and cluster filesystems, and in high performance computing using MPI and/or GPGPU programming.

Experience of diffractive imaging is desirable but not essential and can be gained from within the role.

Your ability to work effectively with people from different disciplines (interfacing with scientists and software engineers in the pursuit of scientific excellence, collecting and transforming requirements, delivering and designing innovative software) is a crucial component to the success of this role.

To be considered for the role at the higher level, you will be expected to have delivered a project involving HPC with MPI and/or GPGPU code.

You should hold appropriate first and postgraduate degrees or demonstrate significant relevant experience.
