As the NSLS-II Director you will be leading a world-class diverse team of over 300 to operate and further build out a premiere user facility that embraces diversity to safely and efficiently deliver high-impact and cutting-edge science and technology for the benefit of society.  One of five DOE Light Sources in the U.S., NSLS-II is an extraordinary hub for the use of synchrotron light to solve the world’s most challenging scientific problems that will improve our lives for decades to come.  With 29 beamlines currently in service out of its full potential of 60, the facility hosted more than 1800 users in 2023.

Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.

You must be a visionary, experienced, and inclusive scientific leader to chart the future of NSLS-II into its second decade of operation while delivering world-class science, an optimum user experience, as well as facility operations and beamline construction in a safe, secure, and environmentally sound manner. You will cultivate a climate of trust and accountability with the NSLS-II stakeholder community, especially its staff and users.

You will serve as the focal point for communication and coordination across the full spectrum of stakeholders including staff, users, peers at BNL and other laboratories, and the local community, as well as laboratory leaders and the facility’s sponsors – primarily the DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences. You will guide the formulation and execution of strategic plans, and champion proposals for new initiatives and projects.

You will have authority over, and allocate the resources provided for operation of NSLS-II, a budget of ~$120M per year, and oversight of NSLS-II construction projects from inception through operations, a portfolio of ~$600M over the next 10 years including prospective work.

In this position you will support the Associate Laboratory Director for Energy and Photon Sciences (ALD-EPS) and will collaborate and coordinate with laboratory leadership as a member of the executive team for the EPS directorate, the BNL Science Council and Management Council.
