DESY

DESY, with its 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world’s leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The Free-Electron Laser FLASH at DESY provides unique opportunities for research using ultrafast short-wavelength radiation. The diagnostic of the soft X-ray pulse parameters is essential to carry out well defined experiments. Here, the duration and shape of the only few fs short photon pulses as well as their arrival times are the most striking and most difficult parameters to measure. To tackle this challenge within our team we are searching for a motivated research assistant. The work at FLASH will be embedded in an international work environment.

The position

  • Join an international team of physicists and engineers
  • Application and improvement of novel XUV-pulse duration diagnostics based on laser generated single cycle THz pulses and XUV-solid target interaction
  • Comparison of different techniques
  • Participate in experimental campaigns at FLASH
  • Visits to other international FEL facilities

Requirements

  • Master in physics
  • Solid background in optics
  • Programming skills (Python)
  • Fluent in English
