SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a talented engineering physicist to join the Electronic Engineering Division (EED) of the Accelerator Directorate. Among other areas, the Division is also responsible for the protection of personnel from prompt radiation in the operation of accelerator systems (Personnel Protection Systems and Beam Containment Systems) and associated supporting equipment.  The successful candidate will bring a good understanding of particle detector instrumentation and readout systems, and how these interact with particles fluxes and showers or of particle accelerator beam diagnostics systems. These include sensors such as ionization chambers for distributed and point loss monitoring, as well as other devices such as diamonds and fibers. He/she will participate in the full control system lifecycle, from developing requirements, to design engineering, to deployment, and maintenance.  The work also involves directing the efforts of Associate Engineers and Technicians within the Division, collaborating with Engineers and Scientists within the Accelerator Directorate, and interacting with other SLAC departments, DOE labs, and the international accelerator community.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with radiation physicists and accelerator safety experts to develop system requirements and mitigation strategies for the protection of personnel from health hazards potentially caused by high energy particles, as well as ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
  • Work with a team of Engineers and Technicians to design, support and maintain credited safety systems used to protect personnel from hazards associated with prompt ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and oxygen deficiency.
  • Translate performance and operational requirements into system specifications.
  • Lead new project developments by preparing schedules, cost estimates and directing installation work.
  • Develop and direct test plans and certification procedures that demonstrate that systems satisfy requirements.
  • Coordinate team work with other accelerator and instrument groups.
  • Maintain configuration control of systems in accordance with SLAC and the Accelerator Directorate’s policies.
  • Support occasional operational-interruption issues on-call outside of the standard work day.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant engineering or science discipline and minimum 2 years of directly related experience in safety systems and hands-on field experience integrating and troubleshooting electronic sensors and instrumentation in a scientific environment.
  • Good understanding of analog and digital electronics and principles, as they apply to particle detector and/or accelerator beam instrumentation systems.
  • Proficiency with schematic CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD preferred)
  • Good understanding of project management including the use of software tools such as Microsoft Project and the ability to develop and manage time-phased budgets and plans.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with technical writing and preparation of formal reports and user manuals.
  • Highly organized, good interpersonal skills and strong communication skills, both oral and written.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in physics, engineering or similar disciplines is highly desired.
  • Familiarity with international safety standards (e.g. IEC 61508 – ISA/ANSI 84.01) for industrial controls and other engineering design standards\best practices (e.g., NEC, NFPA-79, etc).
  • Experience of designing and deploying PLC-based control systems, including programming ladder logic applications and interlocks.

Note:  This position does not include circuit-board (PCB) level electronic design, or significant conventional application programming (e.g., java, python, ruby)
