Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron. It works like a giant microscope, harnessing the power of electrons to produce bright light that scientists can use to study anything from fossils to jet engines to viruses and vaccines.
The Engineering Group plays a key role in the design and construction of equipment used at Diamond to carry out the ground breaking scientific research.
We have a full programme of new equipment developments and upgrades and we need additional electrical engineers to help do this.
Working with teams of scientists, engineers and technicians, you will provide design solutions for Diamond’s (Beamline) Control and Instrumentation Systems. These systems include precision motion controls, detector and diagnostic instrumentation, vacuum controls, automated sample manipulation and robotics, safety interlock systems, data networks, timing and triggering systems. Your designs will utilise a variety of technologies including PLCs, distributed IO systems, electronic signal processing, and specialised cabling and rack systems
Electrical Design Engineers
We are seeking Electrical Design Engineers. You should have a HND or degree and some experience in designing special purpose machinery. Training will be provided but any experience in any of the following would be an advantage; Electrical Rack design, Precision motion control using stepper motors and piezo actuators, Vacuum control systems, Safety circuits, Low Voltage systems, Programmable logic controllers, Distributed I/O and Pneumatic controls. Experience in using AUTOCAD would be an advantage.
Graduate Electrical Design Engineers
We are also seeking recent graduates, or those who are expected to graduate this year, with an Electrical Engineering related degree who can join us as Electrical Designers. No experience is necessary but you should have a good grasp of the fundamentals of Electrical Engineering, the ability to communicate effectively, show initiative and have lots of enthusiasm.
We work in a friendly, collaborative environment with opportunities for training and career development with support to progress to Chartered Engineer status.
Where appropriate for the role, we will consider flexible working arrangements and secondment opportunities (e.g. for fixed-term contract positions).
