Group Leader Timing and Synchronization (FEL)

Website psich_en SwissFEL at Paul Scherrer Institute

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, postgraduates or apprentices. Altogether PSI employs 2100 people.
PSI operates the large research facility SwissFEL, one of the five free-electron lasers world-wide which generate hard X-Ray pulses with durations in the femtosecond range. This requires a highly precise timing reference which is distributed to various systems in the facility, ranging from RF systems with frequencies between 3 and 12 GHz, mode-locked lasers, and arrival-time diagnostics for electron bunches and laser pulses. As a timing reference, both ultra-stable RF signals and pulses from modelocked reference lasers are used, and distributed in length-stabilized optical fibers.
For our Measurement Systems and Synchronization Section we are looking for a Group Leader Timing and Synchronization (80 – 100%)

Your tasks

You will lead a group, including budget responsibility, comprising physicists (PhD), engineers, and technicians. Your group operates and extends the synchronization systems and arrival-time diagnostics and further develops these to fulfill future requirements. These range from project planning to the design, construction, and documentation of the systems. You will actively participate in these tasks. Collaboration between organizational units is an important component at PSI, and will require your support and engagement.

Your profile

You possess a university degree in electrical engineering, physics, or equivalent, preferably with a PhD. Furthermore, you have expertise in highly precise electrooptical signals and their use in timing measurements in the femtosecond range. You will be pro-active and open to new ideas with the ability to work with ease with different personalities in a heterogeneous environment. You will be fluent in both oral and written English. Good knowledge of the German language would be advantageous, or you will demonstrate the desire and ability to acquire the necessary language skills.
Ideally, you have experience with working at accelerator facilities and with synchronization systems for free-electron lasers. We are an equal opportunity employer and encourage applications from suitably qualified women.

We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration.
You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
