The Data Science and Systems Integration (DSSI) Program of the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is looking for an experienced hardware integration and controls engineer. In this role, you will be working collaboratively with scientific, engineering, and technical staff to enable continued operations and expand experimental capabilities of 30 state-of-the-art synchrotron beamlines, as well as for a cryo-electron microscopy facility. The NSLS-II offers a large-scale scientific facility working environment, which combines the scope of a large industrial facility with the excitement and challenges of world-class research experiments. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interact with scientists and engineers to identify hardware integration requirements, outline potential solutions, and create project proposals. Examples of systems to integrate include: general-purpose I/O enclosures, motion interfaces, electronics racks, and computers
- Project management for hardware integration projects within DSSI. Refine requirements, design, implement, test, and document solutions. Contribute to larger projects which have integration needs
- Perform as a subject matter expert, consulting DSSI teams and facility staff on best practices and approaches in hardware integration, ensuring facility and system standards are met
- Understand and contribute to the development of various layers in the DSSI technology stack, such as hardware drivers, control system software, and user interfaces
- Maintain electrical safety
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field of study
- At least three (3) years of relevant professional experience
- Demonstrated experience with integrating hardware in control systems. Knowledge of and interest in the low-level aspects of control systems
- Ability to generate high quality schematics, system drawings, design documentation, and requirements specifications
- Ability to work with standard test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, function generators, digital power supplies, logic analyzers
- Effective oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
- A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with professionals from diverse backgrounds
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- An advanced degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or closely related field of study
- Knowledge of advanced concepts such as: recognizing and resolving ground loop errors, transmission line and cable termination theory, heat load and passive vs active dissipation capacity, fuse characteristics and overcurrent protection, and conductor sizing for worst case current loads and temperatures
- Experience with advanced instrumentation such as motion control, detector systems, data acquisition, and low-level I/O interfacing a wide variety of sensor and control signals
- Ability to design and fabricate protoboards and printed circuit boards
- Experience with Linux operating system
- Experience with developing software using C, C++, or Python
- Experience with development for Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS)
