Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.
About the Role
We now have an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled and experienced Scientist or Engineer to take up the role of Head of the Diamond Diagnostics Group, managing a team of 6 and holding the group budget.
As Head of the Diagnostics Group you will be responsible for the operation and future development of the electron and photon beam diagnostic equipment of the Diamond accelerators, transfer lines and front-ends as well as some photon diagnostics on beamlines. You will also manage the operation and future development of orbit and multibunch instability feedback systems of the storage ring.
You will contribute proactively to studies to improve Diamond’s performance and in particular its beam stability.
Diamond is planning a major upgrade of the facility in the coming decade, known as Diamond-II, which will replace the current electron storage ring with an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy. A significant part of the role therefore is the planning and development of all of the upgraded diagnostics and feedback systems that will be installed on Diamond-II.
You will keep up to date with world-wide developments in diagnostic and feedback systems relevant to Diamond, propose and carry out relevant development projects and promote collaborations with other laboratories as appropriate.
A flexible approach to working hours is required along with occasional UK and overseas travel.
You should hold a degree, and preferably a PhD, in a relevant branch of physics or engineering.
You will have practical experience of working with particle beam diagnostics, an understanding of their operation, and of electromagnetism in the radiofrequency domain.
You will have experience of staff management, with the ability to direct and motivate staff.
Any working knowledge of the operation of particle accelerators, control theory and feedback systems and of safe systems of work will be beneficial.
You will demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills to work effectively with staff and stakeholders at all levels.
