CONTEXT & JOB DESCRIPTION

As Head of Safety, you will be in charge of, and equipped with the necessary means to effectively guarantee compliance with legal and regulatory rules on health, safety, and working conditions, incurring employer liability as defined by French labour law. You will supervise and manage the 24 staff members and the activities of the Safety Group and you will also be responsible for matters related to:

  • nuclear activities, for both non-medical applications and for future medical applications, in his position as title-holder of the authorisations to carry out nuclear activities, delivered by the French Nuclear Safety Authority;
  • the protection of the environment (as regulated by the French Code de l’Environnement);
  • site security (relations with the competent French Authorities, in particular the SGDSN and the DGSI).

In particular, your main tasks will include the following:

  • Supervise and manage the Safety Group’s staff and activities;
  • Guarantee compliance with French labour law on health, safety and prevention within ESRF;
  • Implement effective organisational procedures with regard to health, safety and working conditions;
  • Oversee all matters relating to the prevention of accidents at work and occupational hazards and diseases;
  • Supervise and assure that the above-mentioned rules and regulations are respected by all departments and groups of ESRF;
  • Act as the title holder of the authorisations delivered by the French Nuclear Safety Authority, and thus to accept that any non-compliance with the rules and regulations relating to nuclear activities may engage your personal legal liability;
  • Provide regular progress reports to the Director General of ESRF on the status of your mission, any difficulties encountered, and any insufficiency of resources;
  • Carry out yearly reviews, with the Director General, of the budget allocated for the execution of your mission;
  • In the context of health and safety, you will present to the Director General the annual prevention program, as defined in article R.4121-3 of the Labour Law, in order to define the necessary budgetary resources;

With respect to health, safety and working conditions, to supervise and take appropriate measures, particularly via preventive actions and through training and information, to guarantee the safety and protection of the health of staff members, in compliance with the corresponding legal rules and regulations.

EXPECTED PROFILE

  • Higher university degree (Master or equivalent diploma offering 300 ECTS) in a relevant field (Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or Health and Safety)
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant operational experience or experience as member of a Safety Group in a research facility or in an industrial company with a strong R&D programme
  • Solid academic knowledge and operational experience in radiation physics and radiation protection
  • Solid knowledge of accelerators and X-ray technologies
  • Excellent command, both written and spoken, of the English and French languages
  • Excellent communication skills and team spirit
  • Well-organised, reliable and committed
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to set priorities
  • Sense of confidentiality and discretion

WORKING CONDITIONS

Permanent contract.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
