Elettra – Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research center operated as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest.

As part of its contribution to the international projects in which Italy is involved, Elettra will also participate in the design and construction of large experimental physics facilities being built in Europe.

A new project called “Elettra 2.0” has been started recently to upgrade the Elettra storage ring. The new lattice envisioned will provide a substantial increase in the brilliance and coherence fraction of the source as compared to the present source.

Job Description:

The radiation protection service of an accelerator facility is in charge of a number of duties ranging from personnel risks evaluation to environmental radiation monitoring and shielding calculation, as well as design and implementation of personnel safety systems.
The successful candidate will be involved in the activities of the Elettra radiation protection team for the design and construction of Elettra 2.0 and for other new experimental physics facilities in Europe.
In particular, he/she will be involved in shielding calculations, gamma spectrometric analysis, decommissioning and clearance evaluations. Moreover, he/she will analyse safety aspects and interact with the people involved in the design of personnel protection systems.
He/she will also participate in the preparation of formal project documents and contribute to the preparation of the response of Elettra to call for tenders. He/she will mainly operate in Trieste with periods of work at international projects sites.


The candidate should have a degree in physics or nuclear engineering and, in addition, a specialization in radiation protection or medical physics, or an equivalent experience of at least two years.

Desirable assets will be:
◾ experience in shielding calculation;
◾ experience in the use of FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation code;
◾ experience in the development and implementation of Personnel Safety Systems;
◾ experience in gamma and X-ray spectrometry;
◾ experience in accelerator decommissioning and activated materials clearance;
◾ accreditation as “qualified expert in radiation protection” (according to the Italian legislative decree n. 230/1995).

Good oral and written communication skills in Italian and English are essential.

Good time management skills and ability to prioritize are expected, together with the capacity to interact with staff and to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

The deadline for the submission of application is June 15th, 2018. The appointment envisioned is a fixed term contract of 36 months. The salary will be commensurate with previous experience and qualifications of the candidate.
