High Energy Engineering X-ray (HEX) Beamline Scientist

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory’s almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

The National Synchrotron Light Source II at Brookhaven National Laboratory (New York State) is seeking exceptional candidates for a beamline scientist position to develop and operate a new state-of-the-art high energy X-ray beamline. As a part of the NSLS-II Diffraction & In-Situ Scattering Program, the High Energy Engineering X-ray (HEX) beamline is being designed specifically as a multi-branch facility using a broad energy band-pass superconducting wiggler source, operating with monochromatic and white X-ray beams above 30 keV.

The HEX facility will offer a customized suite of synchrotron X-ray analysis techniques to advance research in energy storage technology, renewable energy production and engineering materials. Research conducted at HEX will provide atomic structural information and 2D-3D imaging in systems and devices under real operating conditions. The HEX mission is to help design materials for next generation energy solutions and increase the industrial competitiveness of New York State and the United States. It is currently at the design phase and is due to become operational in 2022.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Refine the science mission and technical scope of the beamline
  2. Reach out and engage with high energy X-ray user communities to promote world-class science programs and foster innovative scientific directions. This will involve domestic and international travel.
  3. Lead the HEX scientific and engineering staff and support all aspects of beamline optical and engineering design, procurement, construction, testing and operations
  4. Oversee installation, operation, upgrade and maintenance of a range of equipment and systems at the HEX beamline and its support laboratories
  5. Take required action to meet project quality, budget and schedule during construction and during operations. Report technical progress status and scientific results.
  6. Develop, monitor and maintain safe practices and working conditions within area of responsibility

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in physics, materials science, or related field
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience working in the field of synchrotron-based materials structural characterization and/or imaging techniques
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills on instruments of similar complexity
  • Strong publication record in synchrotron-based research
  • Ability to effectively lead a team comprising a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technical staff, and users
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • At least 10 years prior experience in advanced structural techniques and full-field imaging techniques (incl. tomography)
  • Demonstrated experience supervising scientific and technical staff, postdoctoral appointees, and/or students. Management of a project including staffing and budgetary resources.
  • Demonstrated track record of in-situ synchrotron measurements under different sample environments (temperature, pressure, mechanical load, electric field,…)
  • Prior experience in any of the following; design, procurement, installation, commissioning and/or operation of a synchrotron X-ray beamline including user support
  • Expertise with setting-up or using X-ray area detectors, imaging detectors and/or energy-dispersive detectors
  • Ability to develop data collection and processing methods, incl. tomography data reconstruction
  • Good knowledge of beamline control systems (incl. motion controls) and Python programming language or equivalent

Other Information:

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate scientific level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills that he or she brings to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience.
