About the Role

We now have an opportunity for a ‘hands on’ Scientist to work on an initially 2-year fixed term basis, focused on in situ microscopy sample environment development within the Imaging and Microscopy group, based at the X-Ray Nanoprobe Beamline (I14) as well as carrying out in situ TEM characterization using the Johnson Matthey ACTEM within ePSIC. The role holder will assist in to growing the programme of in situ characterization of catalysts and materials research at the Hard X-ray Nanoprobe and Johnson Matthey

The Hard X-ray Nanoprobe beamline is a dedicated facility for nanoscale microscopy, optimised for scanning X-ray fluorescence, X-ray spectroscopy (XANES) and diffraction with techniques such as Ptychography, tomography and in-situ capabilities currently being rolled out users. I14 has a growing user community with a wide range of scientific interests, from environmental science, biological imaging, and catalysis through to energy and materials science.

Johnson Matthey is a world-leading company in the field of functional materials. They have major activities in automotive catalysis, fine-chemical synthesis, refinery catalysts and battery materials. JM already has extensive interactions with Diamond Light Source, including through the contribution of the JEOL ARM200F at ePSIC.

As an In Situ Microscopy Scientist you will develop and commission gas/heating/liquid/biasing sample environments for nanoscale experiments across the Imaging and Microscopy Group, assist external and internal users on the I14 beamline to enable them to perform experiments; provide technical and scientific expertise, advise on strategy for experimental and data collection procedures including data analysis, and enabling the publication of the results. Additionally, you will support the scientific research projects of Johnson Matthey utilising in situ capabilities within their ACTEM and the I14 beamline.

You will also be involved in beamline and peripheral lab development; managing the development, procurement, testing, installation, and maintenance of bespoke scientific equipment and software to perform novel experiments, contributing to strategies and implementations for improvements to operational procedures and beamline component development, and providing input and recommendations in safety aspects of the beamline and peripheral laboratories.

This post represents an excellent opportunity to create both collaborative and personal scientific research programmes exploiting the capabilities of multi-lengthscale in situ characterisation of materials in key areas of chemistry and functional materials research. You will be at the forefront of this exciting new research and have the opportunity to tackle industrially relevant scientific questions while working with Johnson Matthey. The postholder will spend 50% of their time working with Johnson Matthey to identify, support and carry-out in-situ TEM experiments and analysis that will increase their expertise in these areas. The remaining time will be used to expand the in situ capabilities and establish new research programmes in materials science within the Imaging and Microscopy Group.

Internally this role is known as a Senior Support Scientist.

About You

We are seeking an In Situ Microscopy Scientist with a background in materials characterisation research and experience employing in situ techniques.

You should have a PhD degree in chemistry, physics, materials science or related fields.

Experience in developing scientific instrumentation is essential, as is demonstrated knowledge and experience of Electron Microscopy. Experience with in situ TEM measurements  or X-ray Microscopy would be beneficial.

You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills, and the ability to interact effectively with staff and facility users at all levels.
