In this exciting role, you will use the multimodal scanning probe platform to identify and characterize the origin of magnetic properties in low dimensional materials as a key player in this emerging field of research. You will be encouraged to creatively approach the research as the project evolves. The ALS pioneered synchrotron-based near-field nano-spectroscopy, and this project continues in that tradition of cutting-edge infrared scientific developments.
The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 14,000 users annually.
What You Will Do:
- Learn synchrotron-based near-field FTIRTest and integrate additional measurement modes – magnetic force (MFM), conductive force (c-AFM), and surface potential (KPFM) microscopy – into an existing near-field spectroscopy endstation (SINS) at the ALS to enable multimodal imaging and nano-spectroscopy.
- Develop an open-source image analysis program to correlate data between measurement modes.
- Conduct collaborative research to reveal the origin of novel magnetic textures in 2D/van der Waals and thin film magnetic materials through direct mapping of magnetic signatures onto electronic and structural features using multimodal imaging and nano-spectroscopy.
- Analyze the results from multiple scanning probe microscopy modes to eliminate artifacts.
- Collaborate and work with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers across LBNL as well as external ALS users.
- Participate in weekly group meetings and departmental seminars.
- Publish original research in peer-reviewed journals; contribute to scientific publications; present research through talks and posters at conferences and workshops.
- Uphold a culture of safety and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
What is Required:
- Ph.D. in physics, materials science, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other related physical science discipline.
- Background in experimental research with a track record of carrying out research projects from initiation to meaningful conclusion.
- Excellent communication skills – both oral and technical writing.
- Ability to learn rapidly and integrate new fields to demonstrate creative problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to work in a team environment and collaborate with researchers from various backgrounds.
- Capable of working as an independent researcher with a high level of scientific judgment and initiative.
- Commitment to safe working practices in accordance with ALS safety policies and procedures.
- Preferred experience in material characterization, infrared spectroscopic methods, or scanning-probe microscopy (training will be provided).
- Experience aligning optical systems.
- Familiarity with image analysis code development and use.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative in cross-disciplinary research problems.

- This is a full-time 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience.
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree and will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
