Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research center operated as a user facility, featuring a 2.0/2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. See http://www.elettra.eu for more information. Elettra has also set up several laboratories supporting the scientific activities of the ELETTRA and FERMI beamlines. The techniques offered in such laboratories are complementary to those available at the beamlines. Notably, the support laboratories carry out an intense training activity targeted to young researchers and students.
Among the laboratories, the NanoInnovation Lab is dedicated to biophysics and nanomedicine. The NanoInnovation Lab is specialized in surface (bio)functionalization (including self-assembling), growth and characterization of nanoscale biocompatible materials and in biomechanics. The NanoInnovation Lab is equipped with several Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM), a Fluorescence Microscope operating also in total internal reflection mode (TIRF), and a set-up for electrochemical readout (Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, EIS). The NanoInnovation Lab also works in close collaboration with the Infrared/Raman spectroscopy/microscopy beamlines and with the Structural Biology and Chem Lab of Elettra.

The successful candidate will be fully involved in the activities of the project BioMec (Applicazione delle tecnologie biomeccaniche a integrazione delle metodiche convenzionali nel contesto ospedaliero), funded through the contribution from Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, “Contributi per la ricerca clinica, traslazionale, di base, epidemiologica e organizzativa, di cui all’articolo15, comma 2, lettera b), legge regionale 17/2004.Within BioMec, we plan to develop an integrative approach that will allow us to correlate biomechanical properties of bioptic tissues with the degree of malignancy of the tumor, in the context of breast cancer. This will allow integrating conventional clinical methods for a more precise diagnosis and prognosis of cancer disease.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of a technological platform for the biomechanical characterization of tumor tissue bioptic slices coming from patients with breast cancer. The candidate will analyze tumor slices mechanical properties via Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), integrated with Fluorescence Microscopy. She/he will then correlate the mechanical measurements with other clinical data available for the specific patients. The candidate will also be actively involved in the cooperation with the other project partners, and in the dissemination and outreach activities. The candidate should possess strong personal skills to pursue collaborative research programs in a team-oriented environment.


A PhD or at least 3 years research experience in Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Engineering or related disciplines is required. Experience in research encompassing AFM-based techniques applied to biological systems and preferentially AFM–based biomechanics, will be an asset.
Good time management skills and ability to prioritize are expected, together with the ability to interact with project partners and to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Good oral and written communication skills in English are essential.

The deadline for the submission of application is 08/05/2018. The appointment envisioned is a fixed term contract of an initial duration of 11 months.
The salary will be commensurate with previous experience and qualifications of the candidate.
