DESY’s laser science and technology group is responsible for research, development and operation of high power femtosecond and picosecond lasers used in particle accelerators and Free-Electron Lasers (FEL). Furthermore the group’s responsibilities include generation of tailored optical laser pulses for FEL user experiments.

The laser engineer will be responsible for upgrades, operation and maintenance of high power, high energy ultrafast lasers systems in the FLASH facility which are used for FEL – laser pump-probe science experiments . Further tasks are support of laser R&D, especially the improvement of laser stability and laser beam delivery to the experimental interaction chambers. Close collaboration with beamline and accelerator scientists and engineers is indispensable for all projects. We offer a versatile and challenging working environment, which fosters professional development in laser science and engineering.

The position

  • Upgrade and maintain high power, few femtosecond OPCPA laser systems
  • Support R&D projects, integrate results to existing lasers
  • Support ultrafast laser beam delivery to FEL science experiments
  • Write test reports, manuals, safety documents and procedures for laser systems
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary international team of scientists and engineers
