Lead Beamline Scientist-Inner-Shell Spectroscopy (ISS)

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory’s almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

The National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking exceptional candidates for the lead beamline scientist position for the Inner-Shell Spectroscopy (ISS) beamline. As part of the Hard X-ray Spectroscopy Program at NSLS-II, the ISS beamline is a high-flux, fast-scanning damping wiggler spectroscopy beamline, with in situ and operando instrumentation integrated in the beamline architecture and data acquisition system. The beamline is optimized for electrocatalytic and heterogeneous catalytic experiments; while an in situ Atomic Layer Deposition reactor and a 1000°C high-temperature reactor expands the program into the area of materials growth.

The ISS beamline offers world-class capabilities for studying the complex science of energy conversion and energy storage. Its high-flux, fast-scanning capability, and associated gas-handling infrastructure will open new possibilities for probing a wide range of materials of both fundamental and technological importance.

The selected candidate will supervise a group of scientific and technical staff. Responsibilities include: lead the safe operation of the state-of-the-art ISS beamline and associated laboratories; propose and manage the ISS operating budget; continue to develop new operando, in-situ, and data analysis capabilities; provide user support for the high-throughput user science program; develop an independent science program and work as member of a team to conduct experimental programs at NSLS-II with a focus on hard X-ray spectroscopy, and collaborate with NSLS-II and BNL scientists and General Users for effective and innovative use of the ISS beamline.
