The TID/Information Technology Services (ITS) provides the computing resources and services to support the ESRF in its scientific missions.

The UNIX unit duties include the users support, definition of technical solutions as well as the management of compute capacity, data storage and archiving. The main challenge is to validate and implement state-of-the-art data management solutions, while ensuring a very high level of availability and IT-security.

Under the direct responsibility of the ITS leader, the Unix unit shall provide a high degree of service to the ESRF users, in a speed-dominated and science driven environment.

We are currently seeking a passionate engineer, willing to develop his/her skills in a very challenging technical environment. The ideal candidate shall be service oriented, with a sound experience in open source solution deployment and demonstrating broad interest in the latest technologies.

To fulfill this mission, the candidate shall have in-depth experience in the following areas:

  • LINUX Systems administration
  • High Performance Computing infastructure
  • Storage management and associated file systems (GPFS, NFS…)
  • Deployment of services and solutions in third party data centres
  • Cyber security solutions implementation at infrastructure level
  • Keep abreast of technological development
  • System and infrastructure monitoring and troubleshooting
  • User support

To ensure the high level of availability required for the facility, the LINUX systems administrator will participate in standby operation.


  • Higher university degree (Master or equivalent 300 ECTS diploma) in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent,
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience as LINUX systems administrator, HPC cluster (SLURM) and large scale storage management (IBM Spectrum scale),
  • Analytical ability, problem solving
  • Relational skills, team spirit and service-oriented attitude,
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF) and able to write technical documentation.

Permanent contract.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
