SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s Accelerator Directorate is seeking an Engineer with a strong background in electromagnet and magnet systems to join its Mechanical Engineering and Technical Support Division (METSD). In this position, you will perform engineering work of considerable scope and complexity and provide technical expertise and support to our Laboratory’s particle accelerator systems with a particular focus on electromagnets and related subsystems that are used to steer and focus particle beams in the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS, LCLS-II), the Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests (FACET-II), the SPEAR storage ring, and future accelerator systems.  This position will report to the Mechanical Engineering Department Head within (METSD).

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Lead and participate in particle accelerator and specialty electromagnet design, fabrication, and testing by performing analysis using expertise in mechanical design, finite element analysis, fluid mechanics, and electromagnetics.  Typical electromagnet types include dipoles, quadrupoles, sextupoles, pulsed magnets and superconducting magnets.
  • Develop, analyze, and interpret electromagnet technical specifications, characterization data, design specifications, and manufacturing plans.  Collaborate with scientific staff to determine performance requirements for magnets. Develop plans to manufacture, refurbish, assemble and test electromagnet systems to achieve key performance parameters.
  • Develop and specify requirements needed to integrate electromagnets with accelerator beamlines incorporating mechanical supports, water cooling, electrical and controls infrastructure.
  • Utilize 3D CAD to independently develop or collaborate with designers to produce drawing and fabrication specifications for electromagnets and related sub-systems.
  • Work with suppliers on procurement and fabrication of electromagnets and provide technical oversight to these activities.
  • Manage assigned accelerator engineering projects including electro magnets.
  • Collaborate with scientific and technical staff to design, procure, manufacture, install and commission beamline and experiment-specific hardware.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Engineering Physics, or related relevant science and engineering discipline and minimum 4 years of experience in developing and supporting magnets.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in the design and fabrication of electromagnets for accelerator or particle beam applications according to physics and engineering requirements. Demonstrated knowledge about magnetic materials.  Experience in applying the relationships between magnet materials, pole shapes, mechanical tolerances and magnetic field quality.
  • Experienced in developing and implementing an electromagnet systems program encompassing design, analysis, integration, manufacturing and measurements.
  • Demonstrated ability in CAD, FEM, and other engineering analysis tools including software modelling of electromagnets.
  • Demonstrated conceptual and problem solving skills and ability to identify and recommend solutions.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability in leading/managing projects
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and to carry out responsibilities proactively.
  • Established ability to contribute to new theories, methods, tools, and field advancements with creativity and innovation.
  • Demonstrated record of achievement in publications, reports, intellectual property (IP), and/or technical products.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate in a team environment.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Experience with the design, fabrication, and operation of Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) systems.
  • Experience in the design and fabrication of superconducting magnets, including undulators.
  • Knowledge in the application of novel types of magnets which may be useful for applications at SLAC, including permanent magnets for in particle accelerators and storage rings.
  • Experience with manufacturing prototype electromagnets while working closely with the manufacturing and magnetic measurements shops.
  • Experience in developing test plans and data analyses for magnetic measurements.
