Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Engineering Division has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Lead Engineer for ALS-U Removal and Installation to join the team.


The Removal and Installation Engineering Lead the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) project will use a broad array of project management skills, and engineering skills such as engineering analysis, computational analysis, experimental and troubleshooting skills, and hardware design experience to plan this large scale installation effort. The position will require close collaboration with the ALS-U technical design team, the LBNL facilities division and the EH&S division.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical engineering and assemblies of complex scientific equipment and experiments with emphasis on practical hand-on experience on overseeing large scale assembly efforts.

The ALS is a dynamic national scientific user facility that provides thousands of scientists from around the world access to bright beams of x-rays, infrared, and extreme ultraviolet light for scientific studies and technology development in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. The ALS is a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undertaking a new project (ALS-U) that will ensure the facility’s leadership in this field for the next decades. This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Serve as lead Removal and Installation Engineer by providing direction and guidance to a small removal and installation engineering team. The team will be supported by a number of technical subject matter expert engineers to develop detail engineering plans for the removal and installation effort.
  • Closely work with the Accelerator Systems Engineering leads, engineers and technicians to integrate the installation effort with the design.
  • Provide engineering requirements to the design team that facilitates ease of installation and maintenance of the components.
  • Use a broad array of engineering design, analytical, computational, and experimental skills in the development of detail installation sequences and methods.
  • Oversee installation crews and be the point of contact during the removal and installation phase for technical teams on the floor.
  • Independently apply engineering principles, methods and research techniques to creatively solve complex problems based on new technology
  • Establish performance criteria and specifications for installation and removal.
  • Release assembly drawings, workinstructions, checklists and other supporting documents to facilitate clear guidelines for the removal and installation crews.
  • Provide technical oversight to procurement staff; advice on vendor qualifications, and technical details of contract or proposal verbiage. Write specifications for technically complex or challenging procurements; including the gathering and organization of technical details and requirements.
  • Develop project scope and estimate related logistics, e.g. cost estimates and assembly/installation times.
  • Work with project scientists to translate scientific needs into engineering concepts and specifications.
  • Supervise other engineers and designers, and serve as mentor to other engineers and technical staff. Be responsible for technical efforts to meet project deliverables.
  • Manage projects of large and medium size in scope, assuming primary responsibility for overall project success.

Additional Desired Responsibilities:

  • May participate in the management of mid to large-scale DOE capital acquisition construction projects.
  • Represent the Laboratory to the outside world in a specific specialty through participation in design reviews.

Required Qualifications:


  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or related field or equivalent experience. Normally 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge and experience in complex scientific experiment engineering design, and mechanical issues and manufacturing thereof.
  • Developed or utilized state-of -the-art technology in relevant engineering areas
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge in engineering integration (mechanical and electrical), mechanical design and fabrication. The lead engineering role typically acquired with 8+ years of experience.
  • Able to independently apply engineering principles, methods and research techniques to creatively solve complex problems based on new technology.
  • Ability to exercise, sound engineering judgment, analytical ability, and evidence of strong written and verbal technical communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective engineering direction and judgment for developmental work.
  • Adaptability and desire to learn new skills and technologies.


Technical Project Management

  • Experience in managing projects of medium scale.
  • Experience in technical management.
  • Experience leading and supervising others effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to assume primary responsibility for overall project success. Understanding of schedule and budget creation and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to make accurate manpower, time and expense estimates for completion of projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions and lead other scientists and engineers in defining goals and implementing activities to realize the goals.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple competing priorities and projects in parallel.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Experience in a R&D and national laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Experience in accelerator engineering.
  • Previous experience with large scale installations and/or operations and maintenance of large user facilities, complex experiments, or industrial installation is preferred.
  • Engineering publications, technical notes, technical writing

  • This is a full time 2-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • Full-time, M-F, monthly paid, exempt from overtime pay.
  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
