Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.
About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a Mechanical Technician to work at the forefront of our work by supporting scientific research on our beamlines.
You will be working across our Structures and Surfaces Group which is dedicated to the study of the detailed structure, chemistry, and electronic behaviour of materials such as battery materials, catalysts, and molecular interfaces. This role will also focus on Beamline I09, which consists of uniquely designed lines to deliver soft and hard x-rays and fully equipped ultrahigh vacuum end stations containing an extensive suite of instrumentation. This allows us to include sample growth capabilities as well as cryogenic (liquid Helium) sample manipulators allowing micron positioning capabilities. A third end station is also being constructed to enable research using a novel state-of-the-art detector system.
Your role will be to support (together with the Senior Mechanical Technician) the scientist and technical support groups associated with the beamline during maintenance, commissioning, and operations.
Your key duties will include:
- The installation, maintenance and upgrading of bespoke, prototype and high-tech equipment such as ultra-High Vacuum optical components, Vacuum equipment and detectors, and diffractometer/goniometer and sample environment equipment
- Working with beamline scientists and engineers in designing and installing new beamline equipment
- Helping users carry out experiments on all branches of the beamline
- Carrying out regular inspection of installed equipment to comply with safety regulations
The role will require a willingness to work flexibly at periods of intense activity and to occasionally travel within the UK when required.
Please note that internally this position is known as a Beamline Technician.
You will have significant technical experience either via an ONC/GNVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) or similar work experience or an apprenticeship.
You will have experience of working in a safe manner and ensuring that equipment is integrated and installed to a high standard.
You should have a good knowledge, or a willingness to learn about ultrahigh vacuum techniques including vacuum pumps, gauges, and sample manipulation and be able to carry out a variety of intricate mechanical and electrical assembly tasks.
An understanding of maintaining a clean and tidy working environment that meets the operational needs of the beamline for investigating atomically clean surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum.
