Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science.

Grade 7: £33,309 – £40,927 pa

The post is available for a fixed-term duration of 36 months.

The John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science at the University of Oxford and Diamond Light Source Ltd. are seeking a highly qualified post-doctoral research assistant to carry out research in the area of accelerator physics and in particular into collective effects in multi-bend achromat storage rings for synchrotron light sources.

The successful candidate will work with members of the Diamond Accelerator Physics Group in studies of collective effects relevant to the Diamond-II upgrade. These studies will establish how the electron beam interacts with its surrounding environment through wakefields or particle-ion interactions, each of which can potentially degrade the beam properties or cause it to become unstable. The successful candidate will investigate ways to mitigate these effects, such as the use of harmonic cavities, feedback systems or changes to the machine optics, and will actively collaborate with other technical groups working on the design.

Applicants should hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in accelerator physics, particle physics or a related field and have a solid background in beam dynamics, lattice design and beam transport studies.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to: work as part of a team; identify research objectives and subsequently conceive, plan and independently execute appropriate activities to deadlines; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; be self-motivated and able to motivate and guide the work of others. Previous experience in the study of collective effects in storage rings and experience of accelerator physics modelling codes such as Accelerator Toolbox, ELEGANT and MBTRACK, would be an advantage.
