Our Detector Operations group is looking for a

Ph.D. student for Characterization and Optimization of the DSSC detectors at EuXFEL 
The position
The candidate will become familiar with the DSSC detector, which is the only 1-Megapixel detector for soft X-rays able to acquire data at MHz frame-rate and offers worldwide unique possibilities in the photon science community (see e.g. Nature Materials volume 20, p. 30–37 (2021), IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, doi:10.1109/TNS.2021.3076602). The candidate will have the opportunity to study the detector performance figures under different operating modes and experimental conditions. This includes dedicated data-taking calibration campaigns at the SCS Instrument of the SASE 3 beamline.
The collected data and the acquired information will be used to optimize the numerous detector settings (each pixel has its own configuration), considering several different scientific goals and classes of experiments (time resolved Fourier Transform Holography, X-ray Resonant Magnetic Scattering and transmission X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy). Together with staff members from the SCS instrument, the candidate will be given the chance also to conceive and perform experiments that can produce original scientific data for its own research, exploiting the applied optimization to the detector parameters, and for the benefit of the User community.
The tasks are in short:
  • understanding of the detector key electronics features, aimed at optimization of performance
  • participation to calibration and characterization data-taking campaigns
  • contribution to calibration and characterization of the existing DSSC system
  • participation to scientific experiments with the DSSC detector and publication of results
  • master degree in physics, electronics engineering or equivalent
  • programming skills (Python and/or C/C++ will be considered assets)
  • basic knowledge of lab electronics setup is considered an asset
  • basic knowledge in data analysis will be considered assets
  • good communication skills and ability to work in a multi-lingual and multi-disciplinary team with English as working language

PhD positions are fully funded for a duration of three years. In justified cases an extension is possible.
Salary amounts to 75% of pay group 13/1 for civil servants in Germany (TVöD Bund). Further benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany.
