Join our team

European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

Our Detector Operations group is looking for a

Ph.D. student for JUNGFRAU detector performance optimization
The position
The Jungfrau detectors are installed at all the hard X-ray instruments of the European XFEL, allowing different kind of scientific experiments to be performed by the users of the facility. The candidate will become familiar with operation of  the Jungfrau detectors at EuXFEL and the existing characterisation and calibration procedures and tools. The candidate will contribute to the characterisation of  the JUNGFRAU detector performances in ‘burst’ operation mode and will provide a viable and validated calibration procedure to allow ‘burst’ mode operation at the scientific instruments. The candidate will test the usage of different sensors with respect to the standard (e.g.: sensors for harder X-rays, non-square pixels), and provide a characterization of the performance. Together with the instruments and the Detector Operations group staff, the candidate will be given the chance to conceive and perform experiments allowing characterisation of detector performance and producing scientific results. The tasks in short are:
  • participation to calibration and characterisation data-taking campaigns
  • contribution to calibration and characterisation of the existing Jungfrau detectors in ‘burst’ mode
  • performance test of Jungfrau detectors with different sensors (e.g. for harder X-rays)
  • participation to scientific experiments with the Jungfrau detectors and publication of results
Requirements
  • master degree in physics or equivalent
  • programming skills (Python and/or C/C++ will be considered assets)
  • basic knowledge of lab electronics setup is considered an asset
  • basic knowledge in data analysis will be considered assets
  • good communication skills and ability to work in a multi-lingual and multi-disciplinary team with English as working language
