At the High-Energy-Density instrument (HED) extreme states of matter are investigated with the goal to decipher the physical properties under a wide range of dense and hot conditions, which in turn will deepen our understanding of astrophysical objects and phenomena as well as the dynamic processes in fusion plasmas and plasma accelerators. The instrument offers a variety of X-ray diagnostics and techniques together with powerful drivers including a high-energy 100J laser system for dynamic compression and an ultra-intense 100 TW system for relativistic laser plasmas.

The High Energy Density (HED) instrument group is looking for a

PhD Student (f/m/d) for high-resolution characterization of dense-plasma surface irradiated by ultra-high-intensity (UHI) laser

The position

In this project, you will work on characterization and understanding of high-density transient plasma surface and interfaces produced by high-intensity optical lasers, using novel femto-second x-ray techniques. This study is crucial for fundamental understanding of laser-matter interaction and subsequent energy transport for broad range of applications including laser processing, inertial confinement fusion, astrophysics, compact particle sources and plasma optics. You will actively join experimental activities at HED instrument at the European XFEL and lead grazing-incidence SDS (surface diffuse x-ray scattering) experiments and implementation of complementary optical diagnostics, such as FDI (Fourier-domain interferometry) and HHG (high-order harmonics) spectrometer implementation and commissioning.

The specific tasks are:

  • Characterization and understanding of high-density transient plasma surface and interfaces produced by high-intensity optical lasers, using novel femtosecond x-ray techniques
  • Research of  high-intensity laser-matter interaction and subsequent energy transport for a broad range of applications (like laser processing, compact particle/radiation sources, plasma optics and intertial confinement fusion)

Including additional opportunities to:

  • Actively participate in experimental and commissioning activities at the HED instrument
  • Understand, optimize and use the grazing-incidence x-ray scattering  to characterize plasmas
  • Implement and commission complementary optical diagnostics, such as FDI (Fourier-domain interferometry) and HHG (high-order harmonics) spectrometer

Requirements

  • master’s degree in physics or other relevant fields
  • experience with high-intensity laser-plasma experiements and programming skills is considered an asset
  • self-motivated with a good ability to work independently
  • strong communication skills and interest in working in a collaborative, international and multidisciplinary team with English as working language

The PhD positions are fully funded for a duration of three years. In justified cases an extension is possible.
Salary amounts to 75% of pay group 13 for civil servants in Germany (TVöD Bund). Further benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany.
