DESY, with more than 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world’s leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.
The Sustainable Materials Group (FS-SMA) at DESY focuses on functionalized polymeric materials on bio-basis. Especially we focus on sustainable processes, for example additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing and 3D printing often require UV-based cross-linking. However, little is known about the physical transformations occurring during the photo-induced cross-linking. In the framework of a German-Swedish-Dutch collaboration between KTH, DESY, U Eindhoven, and TUM, we aim at understanding the fundamental processes during photopolymerization and their influence on optical and mechanical properties of monolayer and multilayer devices. Here, we plan to apply our recently developed real-time monitoring with synchrotron- and neutron-based grazing incidence scattering. Thus, we are looking for a motivated PhD student. The PhD student will be located at DESY and will be enrolled at TU Munich in the TUM School of Natural Sciences.
About your role:
- Investigating sub-micrometer additive manufacturing using advanced characterization methods
- Performing and analysing synchrotron and neutron scattering experiments
- Mechanical and optical characterization of the functional multilayers with respect to applications
- Publication and presentation of results at national and international meetings and conferences
Good reasons to join:
Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time and job-sharing. You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a job ticket at both locations.
About you:
- Master completed in physics, material sciences, materials chemistry or physical chemistry or comparable natural science
- Fluent business English
- Knowledge of coating technologies
- Knowledge of X-ray or neutron scattering techniques is advantageous
- Experience in presenting scientific results

DESY in Hamburg does not grant doctoral degrees directly but collaborates with the KTH, U Eindhoven, and TUM. Candidates for thesis research will have to satisfy the terms of admission for doctoral theses of the University. PhD students receive a monthly salary of 67% of the payment of the remuneration group 13 TVöD (Federal Government).
