European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques. Early user operation started in September 2017.

Our HED (High Energy Density) Instrument Group is offering a position as

PhD Student (f/m/d)

The position

  • exploring physical properties and new state of matter under extreme condition or pressure and temperature with fast X-ray techniques
  • developing pre-compression devices, i.e. diamond anvil cells with our high energy laser (DIPOLE Laser)

   Including additional opportunities of:

  • participating in projects about shock dynamic experiments performed at other large scale facilities (i.e. synchrotrons, FELs)
  • taking an active part in the ongoing experiments realized at the HED instrument

Requirements

  • master’s degree in physics, material science, experimental geoscience or other relevant disciplines
  • practical experience with extreme condition science, static compression (DAC) and/or shock dynamic compression are considered an asset
  • knowledge of X-ray based methods is considered an asset
  • experience in computing and coding is considered an asset
  • self-motivated with a good ability to work independently
  • strong communication skills and interest in working in a collaborative, international and multidisciplinary team with English as working language
