European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The Sample Environment and Characterization (SEC) group of the European XFEL provides state-of-the-art sample preparation, characterization and delivery techniques for a wide range of different scientific fields. To support user operation, the group maintains laboratory space and equipment for internal and external user groups. A research focus of the Sample Environment and Characterization group are liquid jet and aerosol sources to deliver liquid samples and suspensions into the X-ray interaction region for diffraction, imaging and spectroscopy experiments.

For our Sample Environment & Characterization (SEC) group we are looking for a

PhD Student (f/m/d) to optimize an aerosol injector for soft x-ray experiments

The position

This PhD project will employ state of the art microfabrication and 3D printing to optimize flow focussing aerodynamic lenses for soft X-ray experiments at the SQS instrument. The wavelengths of this instrument are well suited for imaging experiments of nano-sized particles, as well as for spectroscopy on free particles and droplets.
The specific tasks are:
  • 3D optimization and fabrication of an aerodynamic lens system for use with soft X-rays
  • reduce background and increase hit rate of the device
  • collaborate on scientific projects within the group, the facility and with external users


  • Master’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or a related topic
  • experience in microfluidics, microfabrication, aerosol science or similar
  • strong motivation to scientifically work in an international team
  • ability to work outside usual office working hours (during shift work periods working times include nights and weekends)
  • willingness to spend a substantial time with the collaborators in Stuttgart
  • good communication skills in English and the ability to work in an international and multi-disciplinary team

The PhD positions are fully funded for a duration of three years. In justified cases an extension is possible.
Salary amounts to 75% of pay group 13 for civil servants in Germany (TVöD Bund). Further benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany.
