The measurement and understanding of strain in semiconductors has a long tradition at the ESRF and more specifically at the ID01 beamline (experimental station). The aim of this work is to understand and tune fundamental parameters when straining various semiconductor materials. The obtained proofs of concept will serve innovative industrial device applications. The process that is currently developed in our lab consists in straining a semiconductor membrane at wafer scale by a double transfer on a soft thick elastomer support slab. The strain controlled up to the elastic limit of the crystalline layer will be studied as a function of sample history and thickness.

The candidate will participate in the fabrication of semiconductor membranes through microelectronics techniques (steps of grinding, surface preparation, chemical and plasma etching, etc.). Furthermore, the characterization of the obtained transferred membranes, their deformation up to extreme levels and their transfer onto a rigid silicon host substrate are part of the scientific goals of this project.

  • PhD in physics, chemistry, material science, or closely related science obtained less than 3 years ago
  • Prior knowledge of basic characterization (AFM, ellipsometry, optical reflectometry, x-ray reflectivity) or microfabrication techniques would be an advantage
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)


Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6-month period.
