The NSLS-II at Brookhaven National Lab is seeking a qualified individual to participate in the initial scientific development of the 22-IR-2 (MET) Infrared Beamline. The beamline is designed to cover the spectral range from below 10 cm‑1 to above 25,000 cm‑1 using high-brightness and pulsed synchrotron light in combination with a variety of measurement techniques dedicated to condensed matter physics spectroscopy. The specific role of the successful candidate will be to determine the beamline’s performance, develop measurement parameters, and to perform scientific measurements for commissioning the beamline. Of particular interest are studies of materials in magnetic fields up to 10T. Additional duties include developing the infrared beamline to facilitate Users’ scientific experiments, plus training and assisting Users in operating the beamline instruments.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- A Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field such as physical chemistry or electrical engineering.
- Experience in conducting spectroscopic measurements using Bruker FTIR type instruments along with lHe cooled infrared detectors.
- Experience studying materials in a cryogenic (lHe cooled) environment.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience working with mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser systems, near-field nanospectroscopy via the apertureless scattering technique, or using a synchrotron infrared beamline.
