Post-doctorate in environmental chemistry

Website CNPEM ‏ Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS)

The project will be developed in collaboration among LNLS, the Environmental Chemistry Group at the Chemical Institute of UNICAMP and the Cellular and Molecular Biology Laboratory of CENA/USP (Piracicaba, SP). The project aims to study the speciation, bioaccumulation and biotransformation of arsenic in two cyanobacteria when exposed to a medium enriched with As (III)/As(V).

Post-doctorate in Environmental Chemistry at the Chemistry Institute at Unicamp (IQ-UNICAMP) and National Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS / CNPEM).

The project will be developed in collaboration with professors from the Environmental Chemistry Group at the Chemical Institute of the University of Campinas (IQ-UNICAMP) with researchers from the National Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS), Sirius (Campinas) and the Cellular and Molecular Biology Laboratory of CENA / USP (Piracicaba, São Paulo).

About the project

The Group of Environmental Chemistry from the University of Campinas (Brazil) offers a postdoctoral fellowship until January 2022. The project aims to study the speciation, bioaccumulation and biotransformation of arsenic in two cyanobacteria when exposed to a medium enriched with As (III)/As(V). The main goal pursued is a better understanding of the role of these organisms present in alkaline-salt lagoons in the Pantanal (Brazil), which have high concentrations of As (up to 3 mg/L), in the biogeochemical cycle of As in this ecosystem.

The different types of samples will be analyzed using a combination of different analytical techniques: High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) coupled with online UV irradiation, Hydride Generation and Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry (HPLC-UV -HG-AFS), liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-Electrospray-MS / MS) and synchrotron radiation produced by a fourth generation source. The analysis by synchrotron radiation will be performed at the CARNAÚBA beamline (Coherent X-rAy NAnoprobe BeAmline) of the new Sirius light source located at the National Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS). The candidate will develop specific sample preparation protocols according to the demands of this beamline, as well as will be involved on the use of the sub-micrometric modalities of the x-ray fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy techniques to analyze the arsenic in the samples related to this project. The cultivation of cyanobacteria will be carried out at the Cellular and Molecular Biology Laboratory of CENA / USP.

Required Skills: The candidate must have: 1) Experience in synchrotron-based spectroscopic techniques (XRF, XAS), 2) Experience in Analytical Chemistry in particular with techniques such as HPLC-HG-AFS, HPLC-MS/MS, 3) Practical knowledge in sample preparation. The integration of the postdoctoral fellow with the project researchers is also desirable. The candidate should have concluded a doctorate less than seven years before the beginning of the PD fellowship.

Attachments: i) Motivation Letter, ii) CV with published articles and evidencing the skills to conduct the project, iii) 2 reference letters, iv) Summary of the doctoral thesis.

This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationalities. More information about the FAPESP Postdoctoral fellowship is available at www.fapesp.br/bolsas/pd

Submission deadline: 11/30/2020

Contact: Interested applicants should submit by email to Prof. Anne Hélène Fostier (anne@unicamp.br) a Motivation Letter; 2 reference letters; a short CV (1-2 pages) emphasizing the skills required in the project; summary of the PhD thesis.
