The group FS-BMX develops methods for structural investigations of biological objects with X-rays and electrons. For structural determinations of macromolecules with electrons we aim at developing novel graphene-based sample holders with minimal scattering contribution. The ultrathin graphene layers will be mounted on a solid support structure. The infrastructure required for the project, including a new CVD system for graphene growth and a lab for photolithography, are available on site. The work will include process development and production of graphene films on different substrates, the application of biological macromolecules to the substrates, and collection as well as analysis of diffraction data using various X-ray and electron sources.

About the role:

  • Process development for graphene growth on different substrates
  • Development of different support structures using UV-lithography and wet- and dry-etching
  • Development of techniques for controlled sample application to the substrates
  • Perform diffraction experiments with the developed sample holders using different X-ray and electron sources

About you:

  • PhD degree in chemistry, physics, nanosciences or a related field
  • Experience in thin-film techniques, UV-lithography and/or diffraction experiments are considered an asset
  • Very good knowledge of the English language
  • Good communication skills
  • An interest in finding inventive ways to solve challenges and problems
