Postdoctoral Appointee – Q-NEXT Extreme Characterization Thrust

Q-NEXT is one of five National Quantum Information Science (QIS) Research Centers funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) and lead by Argonne National Laboratory. In the extreme characterization thrust of this center, we are focused on merging the frontiers of advanced characterization with the key issues of platforms for quantum information processing, storage, and transduction as well as sensing. In this position, we are seeking a post-graduate researcher to focus on the interplay of surface structural, electronic, and magnetic phases and how they impact the coherence of qubits using advanced X-ray probes ranging from photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS, ARPES) to surface diffraction. The candidate will be working closely with a large team of QIS, materials, and device experts from national laboratories, universities, and industry.

Position Requirements

Necessary knowledge and skills:

  • A strong background in quantum information or sensing is preferred.
  • Experience with condensed matter and semiconductor physics is advantageous but not necessary.
  • Experience in surface science is advantageous but not necessary
  • Strong experimental skills in development of UHV instruments is a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication as well as data analysis skills.
  • Strong skills in collaboration and ability to work independently.

Education: A PhD degree completed within the last three years or soon to be completed in physics, chemistry, material science, electrical engineering, or a related discipline. For additional questions, please contact Dr. John W. Freeland (freeland@anl.gov).
