The X-ray Science Division (XSD) seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to contribute to the development of experimental techniques using conventional and coherent imaging in the ultrafast time domain and computational framework for modeling and reconstructing the images at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The successful candidate will work with scientists in the XSD Time-Resolved Research Group to design and construct synchrotron x-ray instrumentation and develop novel imaging methods for studying dynamic systems such as multiphase and turbulent fluid flows at the current and upgraded APS. The position presents an opportunity to contribute to the time-resolved x-ray program (with emphasis on high-speed imaging) by developing experimental and analysis techniques that fully use the time-resolved x-ray experiment capability of the APS. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in physics, mechanical engineering, Materials Science, chemical engineering, and a strong interest in x-ray scattering and imaging. Synchrotron x-ray imaging experiments and analysis experience are an added preference.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Ph.D. in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field within the last 3 years
- The ability to conduct research addressing fundamental or applied scientific questions
- Demonstrated strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- The ability to design experiments and instrumentation in support thereof
- Experience conducting synchrotron x-ray experiments
- Experience with x-ray scattering and imaging experiments, image processing, analysis, and reconstruction are an added preference
- Knowledge of fluid dynamics
- Familiarity with scientific programing languages such as python
