Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

At BNL, the Energy & Photon Sciences (EPS) Directorate is working to solve grand challenges in energy that will create solutions and security for the nation’s energy system. Advances in basic science are the underpinning of transformational discoveries that rely on Brookhaven’s data-driven research, cutting-edge synchrotron science, and leadership in energy science through real-time study of working conditions in applicable energy materials. As part of the capabilities and science focus of the EPS, the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is a state-of-the-art 3 GeV electron storage ring. The facility offers scientific and industrial researchers an array of instruments (beamlines) using x-ray, ultraviolet, and infrared light to enable discoveries in clean and affordable energy, high-temperature superconductivity, molecular electronics, and more.

Position Description

Colloidal lead halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have recently emerged as a highly efficient single-photon emitter with record optical coherence. The aim of this scientific project is to build an Intelligent Quantum Dot ‘Growbot’ by integrating deep Machine Learning (ML) strategies with a continuous flow reactor equipped with in situ Synchrotron X-ray structure analysis during the synthesis of PQDs. This project spans subject matter areas from synthesis chemistry to X-ray diffraction and scattering data analysis and scientific computing.  The successful candidate will work closely with NSLS II beamlines (XPD/PDF/CMS/ISS) for measurements, data collection & analysis. The candidate will also work with the scientists in both the Computational Science Initiative (CSI) and the Data Science and Systems Integration (DSSI) group at NSLS-II to interface AI algorithms for data collection and analysis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Spearhead a focused effort to interface a high throughput nanosynthesis reactor with NSLS II beamlines, which is being developed for growing PQDs and other nanomaterials for energy applications based on synthetic chemistry knowledge.
  • Develop methods to collect & analyze PDF, Uv-Vis & SAXS data and integrate the input/output data with the Bluesky data acquisition framework at NSLS-II.
  • Collaborate with a wide range of researchers across a variety of disciplines including synthetic chemistry, opto-energy & quantum materials, and machine learning and AI methods both within BNL and external.
  • Publish and presents the results of these studies to the community.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • ·       PhD degree in the Physical Sciences (Physics/Chemistry), Material Science or related field.
  • Experience in materials synthesis and in-situ characterization data collection.
  • Experience with Python Programming Language and code development
  • Demonstrated record of scientific contribution through publications and talks in related fields.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse, discipline spanning team of scientists and engineers

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Experience in two or more of the following:

  • Experience with Materials Synthesis, Scattering & Diffraction, and Optical Spectroscopy (Uv-Vis, NIR-IR) or a related technique.
  • Experience creating data analysis methods and procedures for Diffraction & Scattering (XRD, PDF/SAXS), and/or Optical Spectroscopy.
  • Experience with material science, solid-state chemistry, or nanoscience

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Work is conducted in a wet chemistry lab, requiring lab PPE

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • Occasional domestic and international travel (5%)

BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.

At Brookhaven National Laboratory we believe that a comprehensive employee benefits program is an important and meaningful part of the compensation employees receive. Our benefits program includes, but is not limited to:

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Care Plans
