This position is the Principal Beamline Scientist (PBS) role whose responsibility is to lead the bending magnet beamline B21 at Diamond Light Source. B21 is a tuneable X-ray beamline (6 to 15 keV) primarily equipped for high throughput small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements of liquid samples using an automated sample handling robot or an inline Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) instrument. B21 provides monochromatic X-rays using a double multi-layer monochromator (0.8% bandpass) for standard SAXS experiments. The beamline will be upgrading (October 2018) to a dual detector, fixed-camera length, X-ray camera to provide a constant scattering vector range of 0.0026 to 1 Angstroms-1 at 12 keV. Future upgrades to be completed by 2019 include implementation of ultra-small angle scattering camera and enabling focused pink-beam for X-ray foot-printing (XFMS) and time-resolved SAXS experiments.
B21 has developed significant in-house, 3-d printing capabilities for quick development of unique sample environments for measurement of non-liquid samples such as waxes and gels. The successful candidate should be familiar with design software such as Fusion360 or OpenSCAD and will be expected to participate in the growing 3-d printing for scientific applications community in the UK. For atypical SAXS experiments, successful candidate will assist visiting scientists in the design and testing of unique sample environments or creating/editing of unique control software scripts.
Suitable Candidates will have expertise in the analysis of SAXS experiments within the context of the structural biology community and material science. B21 maintains a large mail-in SAXS community and it is expected the PBS will be active in the recruitment and training of users for our mail-in services at Diamond.
The PBS will lead the beamline team in the research and development of anomalous SAXS, cryo-SAXS and coherent X-ray scattering experiments within the long-term vision plan for Diamond. The PBS will maintain a world-class competitive beamline and develop an internationally competitive research programme which exploits the capabilities of B21 and Diamond facilities in general. B21 is a member of the Soft-Condensed Matter (SCM) Village at Diamond which consists of the 4 world-leading beamlines for BIOSAXS (B21), CD (B23), microfocus SAXS/GISAXS and USAXS (I22) and IR-microspectroscopy (B22). It can be expected the PBS will be responsible for initiating cross-beamline experiments to achieve the scientific goals of our visiting scientists.
