Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. Located on the Harwell Science & Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire a 20-minute drive south of Oxford in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Diamond Light Source conducts world-class research in virtually all fields of science and offers rewarding career opportunities.

This position represents a unique opportunity to contribute to a major upgrade of the facility, the Diamond-II programme. The programme includes upgrading the synchrotron to a low emittance lattice, alongside major investments in experimental facilities including a new Coherent Soft X-ray Imaging and Diffraction (CSXID) beamline. The CSXID will be optimised to image the operando dynamics of nanomaterials in 3D from magnetic nanodevices to functional materials using primarily ptychographic imaging and diffraction.

We are seeking a Principal Beamline Scientist to lead the development of the CSXID beamline. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, installation, operation and upgrade programmes of the beamline and will be expected to conduct internationally leading research on quantum or functional materials. We encourage applications from candidates with a materials research background and an active program in quantum materials, magnetism, x-ray imaging or related discipline. Expertise in polarised soft x-ray imaging, spectroscopy or diffraction is essential.

The CSXID beamline will form part of the Magnetic Materials Group which currently operates four beamlines performing research into quantum materials using hard X-ray scattering, soft X-ray spectroscopy, diffraction and microscopy and soft X-ray Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering.
