About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.

About the Role

We are looking for a Principal Beamline Scientist for the DIAD beamline which is be a dual beam instrument capable of quasi-simultaneous micron-scale imaging and diffraction. DIAD welcomed its first users in February 2021 and this represents an exciting opportunity to work with the user community to build the DIAD science program and deliver ongoing improvements.

The properties of many materials depend on the interaction between microstructure, mechanical or chemical state, phase and composition. All of these factors vary dynamically under the influence of mechanical load, temperature, electrical potential, growth, etc. With DIAD’s combined imaging and micro diffraction facility we will be able to study and characterise materials and processes from a wide variety of scientific fields such as soft tissues and implants, geology, mineralogy, engineering and material science, electrochemistry, plant biology, and others under dynamic conditions. The beamline consists of a highly integrated instrument for tomography and micro-diffraction; thanks to a sophisticated beamline design both techniques can be used simultaneously. DIAD will be equipped with a suite of custom-made sample environments to allow many of the processes described above to be studied in situ.

You will be part of a world-class facility working closely with internal staff and external scientists, technicians, engineers and software support. You will manage a team of beamline scientists and technicians to support user operations, leading the instrumental development programme and elaborating on the long-term strategy for the beamline and ancillary equipment, including preparation laboratories.

In this role you will have responsibility for completing the optimisation phases of DIAD, developing the user community and establishing your own research program on the beamline.

About You

You should have preferably a PhD in a relevant scientific area with significant post-doctoral experience using X-rays in large-scale facilities.

You must have an active research program in a field relevant to the use of the diffraction, imaging or tomography.

You should be able to highlight your personal contributions to research publications and demonstrate international recognition for their work.

You will have proven experience of managing a team.

You will have the ability to interact effectively with teams of technicians, engineers, and software support.

Benefits

Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
