This position is to lead one of eBIC cryoEM beamlines at Diamond Light Source. Funded by the Wellcome Trust with the UK Medical Research and Biotechnology and Biology Research Councils, eBIC is a UK National Centre for cryo-electron microscopy in the life sciences and provides scientists with state-of-the-art instruments and expertise in the field of cryo-electron microscopy, for single particle analysis, cryo-tomography, electron crystallography, and cryoFIB/SEM. eBIC is currently operating 4 high-end Titan Krios microscopes (Falcon 3 + K2/K3 GIF) together with a 200 keV microscope (Talos Artica), a dual beam cryo-FIB/SIM (Scios) and has up to 20% access to a Titan Krios for containment level 3 work at OPIC in Oxford. In addition, a nascent industry collaboration with Thermo Fisher provides an additional Titan Krios and 200 keV microscope (Glacios) dedicated for industry users. eBIC and B24, a full-field cryo X-ray transmission microscopy beamline, makeup the recently established Biological Cryo-Imaging group at Diamond, which together with the capabilities of the physical science Imaging and Microscopy group provide a platform for using electrons, X-rays and visible light to image an array of samples across a diverse range of length and time scales.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally competitive research programme which exploits the capabilities of eBIC and Diamond in general. To facilitate this, funding for a post-doctoral research fellow (subject to a suitable case being made) is available with the post as well as the opportunity for PhD studentships within Diamond’s PhD fellowship programme. You will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories for structural and cellular biology embedded at the beamline and within the Research Complex at Harwell to pursue your research. Support for external grant funding through national and international funding agencies to take full advantage of the stimulating and exciting international research environment at Diamond is also provided. As the leader of an eBIC cryoEM beamline team of scientists and engineers you will also contribute to leading development of new software and instrumentation for cryoEM imaging as well as provision of user support by assisting visiting scientists to carry out a wide range of experiments.

Suitable candidates will have expertise and a strong track-record in cryoEM methods, with preferable a strong background in electron tomography and sub-tomogram averaging.
